Northern Exposure – Day 3

We checked out of our lovely bed and breakfast on Tuesday morning after a sumptuous breakfast.  We drove up to Mt Constitution for an aerial view of the island but the fog was quickly rolling in.  We found a better vantage point at a lower elevation and hung out for a while enjoying the vista.  Then we said bye bye to Orcas island as we boarded the ferry back to Anacortes to continue heading up north to Vancouver B.C.

Yummy dinner at ‘Shanghai No.1’ restaurant we chanced upon in the Richmond district of Vancouver + Asian dessert at some place called ‘100% Healthy Desserts’, can’t go wrong with that…

Northern Exposure - Day 2

The day started with a hearty breakfast to prepare us for a long anticipated whale watching excursion. We took the ferry to the San Juan Island where the tour was based. We donned on our orange wetsuits and hopped into the Western Explorer which is a 27' Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat, similar to the boats the Coast Guard uses for search and rescue. We headed south towards the Olympic mountains and soon found a local pod of Orcas which were hunting for salmon this time of year.

At first, the Orcas were contented to swimming at a leisurely pace but soon the excitement picked up as several big Orcas started jumping out of the water. It was an amazing sight to witness as Orca after Orca shot into the air. Wheee!

Northern Exposure - Day 1

We woke up bright and early on the first day of our week long vacation. It was my mommy’s birthday too and we attempted to make her some breakfast before we headed off.  On our way out, we stopped by REI and picked up a few ‘essentials’.  We then drove north to a little town called Anacortes, an hour and a half from Seattle and boarded the ferry to Orcas Island.  We checked into our charming little bed and breakfast called The Kangaroo House.  The innkeeper helped arranged to have flowers in my mommy’s room as a surprise for her birthday.  We then went to a nice dinner at a restaurant called Lulu’s to complete the celebration.

Welcoming the Piongs!

Our favorite 19-year-old, Anthea Piong from Singapore, is starting college at Seattle University.  She was so lucky to have her mom, Auntie Lena and big brother Paul, fly over from Shanghai and Texas respectively, to help her settle in.  We welcomed the Piongs with a ‘Surf N Turf’ BBQ dinner. Big thanks to Mas, our grill master who helped with the BBQ and Emil, who brought his famous lamb stew to share.

Adventure in Maryland & Pennsylvania

2 Wednesdays ago at 8pm, we bought two tickets to Baltimore and off we went at 8am the following day!

My wife and I flew 2,334 miles from the West coast to the East coast of USA to visit Fr. Edmund Woon who just graduated from Loyola University, Maryland with a Masters degree in Counseling.

We later traveled to Latrobe, Pennsylvania with Fr. Paschal before returning to Seattle.

Our one-week trip was full of pleasant surprises, grossly exceeding our expectations!

Just another meal at Emil’s…

Saturday evening, Emil invited us to his home for dinner.  Emil whipped up some grilled black cod, sautéed a dozen shishamo (smelt fish), marinated a couple of portabella mushroom, bought some fresh oysters, made several sesame and plum rice balls, arranged some fresh greens with homemade peanut dressing…oh, nothing fancy…

Just another meal at Emil’s!

The Golf Club at Newcastle

Saturday morning, Will played a round of golf with Mantje at the beautiful Newcastle golf course which boasts stunning city and mountain views while my parents and I hunted garage sales at a nearby neighborhood.  We then met up with the golfers for dim sum.
